WAILUKU — A Maui grand jury has indicted a Kaunakakai man on one count of second-degree murder in the May fatal shooting of a man found dead on a Molokai road.
WAILUKU — A Maui grand jury has indicted a Kaunakakai man on one count of second-degree murder in the May fatal shooting of a man found dead on a Molokai road.
Jeffrey Kalani Davis, 39, also was indicted on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, prohibited possession of a firearm and keeping a firearm in an improper place, The Maui News reported. He’s being held on $1.2 million bail.
Davis is charged in the death May 20 of Koshari Kahikili of Mapulehu.
Witnesses told police Kahikili was intoxicated when he was last seen leaving a party at 3:30 a.m. with another man.
At 6:45 a.m. a moped rider saw Kahikili lying motionless on a dirt roadway off Kamehameha V Highway. Investigators determined he had been shot in the head with a small-caliber gun
Police said they found the man Kahikili had left the party with, later determined to be Davis, lying under a boat parked in the yard of a home about a mile away.
Police obtained permission to search under the boat and found a .22-caliber revolver, investigators said.
Davis was arrested a day after the shooting but was released while the investigation continued.
Maui Police officers arrested Davis on Friday and transported him by ferry from Molokai to the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor.
